A good clarifying question forces the speaker to convert vague impressions into specifics, which surfaces assumptions that neither side had stated. The act of asking also signals genuine attention, so the speaker feels respected and tends to volunteer more. Because you confirm meaning before reacting, you cut the risk of building a response on a misread, which lowers the cognitive load of the whole exchange. Targeted questions also keep you, not your guesses, in control of what the conversation actually addresses.
