Rhetorical Appeals

Pathos: Shared Values Appeal

Connect your message to deeply held beliefs and moral principles of your audience.

Last updated Jun 25, 2026·

What & why

What it is
An emotional appeal strategy that connects your message to deeply held beliefs, principles, and values shared by your audience. By aligning your argument with what people care about most (such as fairness, progress, family, or success), you create powerful motivation for action. This technique moves beyond logic to tap into fundamental human drivers.
Why it works

People act on what they care about, not only on what is true. Tying a proposal to a value the audience already holds, such as fairness, progress, or responsibility, gives them a reason to act that comes from inside their own commitments rather than from outside pressure. Framing the same request as the expression of a shared principle tends to generate more durable motivation than appeals to obligation, because the audience experiences acting on it as being consistent with who they are.

Questions & answers

What are shared values appeals in business speaking?

Shared values appeals connect your message to principles, beliefs, and priorities that you and your audience both hold important (like integrity, innovation, customer focus, or excellence). This creates emotional resonance and alignment.

How do I identify shared values with my business audience?

Research company mission statements, observe organizational culture, ask about priorities and goals, listen to language they use, and identify common professional values like efficiency, quality, growth, and customer satisfaction.

How do I appeal to values without sounding preachy?

Connect values to practical outcomes, use audience's own language and examples, focus on how values drive business success, avoid lecturing, and demonstrate rather than declare your commitment to shared values.
