Argumentation Techniques

Reductio ad Absurdum

Disprove opposing arguments by showing their logical conclusions lead to absurd outcomes.

Last updated

What & why

What it is
A technique that refutes a claim by provisionally accepting it as true, following it to its logical conclusion, and showing that conclusion to be impossible, contradictory, or plainly unreasonable. Because a premise that forces an absurd result cannot itself hold, the original claim is undermined on its own terms rather than by counter-assertion. It works best when the chain to the absurd endpoint is genuinely valid, not exaggerated, otherwise it slides into a straw man or slippery-slope fallacy.
Why it works

By granting the opposing premise and following it to an absurd end, you sidestep the resistance that comes from contradicting someone directly. The audience watches the position collapse under its own logic rather than under your assertion, so the conclusion feels self-evident instead of imposed. Pushing an idea to a vivid extreme also makes its hidden flaw concrete and memorable, and the contrast between a reasonable starting point and a ridiculous endpoint creates the small jolt that exposes where the reasoning breaks.

Before & after

Before

That idea is stupid and would never work.

After

If we eliminated all quality control to save money, we'd eventually have 100% returns and zero customers. Clearly, some quality investment is necessary.

When you’ll use it

Budget discussions: "If we cut all training expenses, we'll save money, but then our staff won't know how to use the new systems, leading to expensive mistakes."

Policy debates: "If we allow unlimited remote work, we could save office costs, but if everyone works from home, we'd have no office culture or collaboration."

Resource allocation: "If we hire only junior staff to save salary costs, we'll need senior oversight anyway, negating the savings."

Risk management: "If we eliminate all safety protocols to speed production, we'll face lawsuits that cost more than the protocols."

Pro tip

Take the opposing argument to its extreme logical conclusion to reveal its flaws.

Questions & answers

What is reductio ad absurdum in business argumentation?

Reductio ad absurdum disproves opposing arguments by showing they lead to absurd or unacceptable conclusions. It demonstrates logical flaws by extending opponent's reasoning to reveal contradictions or impractical outcomes.

How do I use reductio ad absurdum appropriately in business?

Focus on logical flaws rather than personal attacks, use reasonable extensions of opponent's logic, avoid exaggeration, and maintain professional tone. Show genuine contradictions rather than creating strawman arguments.

When should I avoid reductio ad absurdum in professional settings?

Avoid it when it might seem disrespectful, with sensitive topics, when relationships matter more than winning arguments, or when the technique might alienate stakeholders. Use sparingly and tactfully.
