What? So What? Now What?

Define the subject, explain its relevance, then specify next steps.

What & why

What it is
A three-part framework widely used in Toastmasters and corporate training for impromptu speaking. Start by defining or describing the subject (What?), explain why it matters or is relevant to your audience (So What?), then conclude with actionable next steps or implications (Now What?). This structure ensures every response is informative, relevant, and action-oriented.
Why it works

This framework follows a sequence listeners find easy to follow: first what something is (comprehension), then why it matters to them (relevance), and finally what to do about it (action). Ordering your points this way tends to match how audiences want to take in new information and ends on actionable clarity.

Before & after

Before

Well, we had this issue with the database... it was causing problems... and then we fixed it somehow.

After

We discovered a database bottleneck (What). This was causing 40% of customer complaints (So What). We've implemented caching and are monitoring performance daily (Now What).

When you’ll use it

Answering unexpected questions in meetings or presentations

Providing impromptu updates to stakeholders or leadership

Explaining a concept or decision to someone unfamiliar with the context

Responding to interview questions about experiences or achievements

Pro tip

What is it? Why does it matter? What happens next?

Questions & answers

What is the What-So What-Now What framework?

It's a three-step impromptu speaking structure: What (define the topic), So What (explain why it matters), Now What (specify actions or implications). It's one of the most popular frameworks in Toastmasters and corporate communication training.

When should I use What-So What-Now What?

Use it when you need to quickly explain something and make it relevant. It's perfect for impromptu questions, status updates, or any time you need to move from description to action. The structure ensures you don't just inform, but make it meaningful and actionable.

How is this different from PREP structure?

PREP focuses on making an argument (Point-Reason-Example-Point), while What-So What-Now What focuses on explaining something and driving action. Use PREP when persuading, use What-So What-Now What when informing and mobilizing.
