Digestion and absorption are different steps
Eating a nutritious meal does your cells no good while the food is still sitting inside your stomach and intestines. Your digestive system has to perform two separate jobs: first, chemical and mechanical digestion break giant starch, protein, and fat molecules into tiny building blocks; second, absorption moves those smaller molecules across the intestinal wall into the blood or lymph.
